Caddie Williams apologizes for Scott snub
ATLANTA, Georgia - Steve Williams, the caddie fired by Tiger Woods last month after serving as his bagman for 13 of his 14 major triumphs, apologized on Wednesday for snubbing his new employer after a victory.
The move came on the eve of the 93rd PGA Championship, where Woods said he was surprised at comments by Williams last Sunday that seemed to diminish their 12 years together and ignore Adam Scott's Bridgestone Invitational victory.
Williams, a 47-year-old New Zealander who was cheered by name while walking alongside Scott up the 18th hole in the World Golf Championships event at Firestone, called it "the best week of my life" and "most satisfying win".
"I have been caddying for 33 years, 145 wins, and that's the best win I've ever had," Williams said. "I sort of believe in destiny sometimes."
Woods chose his words carefully on Wednesday and said little about the flap, although he said his agent, Mark Steinberg, met Williams on Tuesday.
"I'm not going to speculate on Stevie," Woods said. "Those are obviously his feelings and his emotions and his decision to say what he wants to say."
On his website, Williams posted a statement apologizing to Scott, who said on Tuesday he had spoken to Williams and had no problem with the comments.
"My emotions following Adam's victory were running very high and at the time I felt like my emotions poured out and got the better of me," Williams said in his statement.
"I apologize to my fellow caddies and professionals for failing to mention Adam's outstanding performance. I would like to thank all those fans at Firestone who made this victory the most special of my career."
Woods said he sent Williams a congratulatory text message after the final round last Sunday.
"I was happy to see Stevie and Adam win. Adam has been a friend of mine, and same with Stevie," Woods said.
"I sent Stevie a nice text after completion of play, congratulating him on his win. It was good to see them go out there and play as well as they did."

"It would rank pretty high. I'm not going to make it when I'm 55 probably, so I need to go ahead and get it done."
Love, whose only major title came at the 1997 PGA Championship, knows the tension of the Ryder Cup quest and the more casual feeling US players have regarding the Presidents Cup and its non-European lineup.

Malaysian girls got gold medal
Malaysian women celebrated a rare success at the international arena when the pair of Vivian Kah and Woon Khe Wee won the Doubles title at the Bankaltim Indonesian Open Gold Grand Prix last weekend.
In an intensely absorbing match, the Malaysian youngsters prevailed in a come-from-behind19-21, 21-19, 21-18 victory over the higher placed Bao Yixin & Zhong Gianzin of China. The Chinese girls had only a week earlier won the more prestigious Japan leg of the Super Series. The Chinese pair is ranked 48 by Badminton World Federation while Vivian & Woo are at 60.
The success of the youngsters who are both in their early twenties, obviously must have brought the smiles to the faces of the people who manage the sport in Malaysia where women badminton has never scored any major success along the international arena. The second Malaysian pairing of Chin Eei Hui & Wong Pei Tty, who at one stage were top ranked by BWF have in recent times faded off through injury and are ranked at 23.
Vivian & Woon play a pretty good brand of the game and have been consistently improving. With proper guidance and continued exposure, there is every likelihood of a promising playing career for the duo.
But it was not all lost for the Chinese girls when Bao Yixin later teamed up with He Habin to clinch the gold in the Mixed Doubles.
The shock of the tournament must really be the elimination of the pre-tournament favourite, the enduring warrior Taufik Hidayat in the semi-finals. He lost out quite tamely 21-10, 21-15 to young Tommy Sugiarto, son of the 1983 World Champion Icuk.
Taufik has been having a relatively ’quiet’ season since his success at the 2004 Olympics and 2005 World Championships. Obviously age is gradually taking its toll on one of the game’s most colourful and popular players.
For the young Tommy, the win against Taufik only brought him momentary joy, for 24 hours later, his teammate Rumbaka Hayam, ranked eight rungs below at 27, finished stronger with an exciting 21-15, 21-16 win in the final.
The French veteran and seasoned campaigner Pi Hongyan, who was seeking her first Grand Prix win of the year failed against her younger Chinese opponent Chen Xiao Jia in the final. In a match that went all the way to the ‘rubber’, a visibly tiring Hongyan had to finally hand the gold medal to Xiao Jia who will go on record as one of the lowest ranked players to win a Gold event. The Chinese is presently at 113 against Hongyan 19th ranking.

Bayern is right to get rid of Van Gaal, claims Kahn
Defending German champion Bayern Munich was right to show Dutch coach Louis van Gaal the door after its third consecutive defeat, ex-Bayern and Germany captain Oliver Kahn said on Wednesday.
In the wake of Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Hanover, van Gaal was told on Monday his Bayern contact will be terminated at the end of the season, a year before it was due to expire.

Brandao released on bail in rape investigation
Marseille's Brazilian striker Brandao has been released on bail after being placed under investigation for the alleged rape of a 23-year-old woman, his lawyer confirmed on Wednesday.
Lawyer Patricia Clusan said the alleged victim had withdrawn her accusation but that did not stop the case being pursued by prosecutors.
"He left free, I said yesterday (Tuesday) that in this case prudence was needed," said Clusan, adding: "And after having consulted the dossier and heard Mr Brandao's explanations I think that logic prevailed."
Brandao was driven away from court in a luxury 4x4 driven by Marseille Sporting Director Jose Anigo.
"We're happy that he left free, we'll see what the investigation into this affair reveals, I can assure you that Mr Brandao has for the moment not had the benefit of the presumption of innocence, that's the least that we can say, I think that the investigation will show that he was (innocent)," his lawyer said.
The 30-year-old player appeared before a court in the southern French city on Wednesday afternoon, a day after being arrested at his home and taken in for questioning as part of the police investigation.
The woman on Friday accused Brandao of raping her at a motorway stopover as he drove her home from a nightclub in Aix-en-Provence last week.
